Rhymefest-Blue Collar (2006)

Got some refreshing hip hop out there for those thirsty for something new. I've had the song "Devils Pie" for a while, but have only recently gotten a hold of some of this Chicago rappers other tracks. This album has some sick samples (like Citizen Cope's "Bullet and a Target"), sick beats, and all in all sick spits.

This album doesn't suck, its actually quite good, and you should download it. Or pay for it.

Gotta post hip hop every once in a while

The Who By Numbers (1975)

This is a great Who album that doesn't get much play...I honestly only discovered it because it was cheap in the used LP section at a local record store. I really dig it though, there are some great tracks, it is just a bit darker. This isn't Who's Next or Tommy but it is absolutely a solid classic rock album by the unmistakable British quartet.

Black Mountain-Black Mountain (2005)

This is the first album by the very cool stoner-esque psychedelic rock outfit Black Mountain. But I'm not talking about the 60's psychedelic that you are probably envisioning...this self titled album was released just a few years ago in 2005.

It balances the line between heavy and pretty, fuzzy and clean while blending the influences of old and new. I'm really into this album right now and am just generally very impressed with the sound the members have collaborated to forge. I'm excited to check out some of the other stuff they've released since.

If you like rock download this album, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Emmerson, Lake, and Palmer-Tarkus (1971)

So today I finally got off my ass and went down to the record store to get a replacement needle for my turntable. Great call because I've been neglecting all these great records I have sitting in my room--Tarkus by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer being one of many.

ELP is one of the definitive powerhouses of progressive rock, spearheaded by the nearly unparalleled virtuoso keyboardist/frontman Keith Emerson. This record is really built around the 20+ minute epic title track that takes up the entire Side A of the album. So...as a warning if you can't handle long songs, don't bother downloading.

For anyone else looking for a classic gem, please do snag this album. Plus how cool is the trippy armadillo-tank?

The Whitest Boy Alive-Rules

Just got this album a couple of days ago, by the European indie-alternative group The Whitest Boy Alive. I know their songs "Burning" and "1517" have enjoyed some commercial success to some extent.

I discovered them as half of the Kings Of Convenience's other project. While Kings of Convenience are super mellow and acoustic, The Whitest Boy Alive is very upbeat, happy, and dare I say poppy with the incorporation of some synthesizers and other electronic sounds.

I like it. It's fun music, give it a listen.

Brant Bjork-Gods and Goddesses (2010)

This has got to be one of the best records released this year. Brant Bjork is a bit removed from the path of the mains stream music scene, but his music is incredible. Super laid back blues driven desert stoner rock is probably the best description of the sound I can offer.

As far as context goes, he was the drummer for the pioneering group Kyuss (which is a whole different story that I just realized I have yet to post).

Context or no context though, this album kicks ass so listen to it.

The Tallest Man On Earth

This record is easily one of my recent favorites. A friend at school introduced me to The Tallest Man On Earth aka the Swedish musician Kristian Matsson right around finals, and I've been listening to him all summer. His sound (mostly his distinct voice) may take a bit to grow on you, but I can assure you that this album is incredible.

His style can most easily be compared to a stripped down Bob Dylan at his most folky of the folk moments. Also, for all you guitarists out there, Matsson does play in some very fascinating tunings that I had never seen prior to hearing him.

My favorite track is definitely "King of Spain" but the whole album is honestly solid, I listen to it start to end without skipping a song.

I know I like all the stuff I post, that's why I post it, but seriously give this one a listen.

Fruit Bats-The Ruminant Band

Here is a great record from another end of the spectrum by the indie folk rock outfit Fruit Bats. I am not familiar with a tremendous amount of history about this group, but I do know that the front man has some connection with the Shins.

Regardless, they are a sweet band and this record is a great listen. If you like it go out and get some of their other albums, I haven't heard anything released by them that has been offensive to my ears. They put on a sweet live show too.

Street Sweeper Social Club

More Tom Morello for you here. Street Sweeper Social Club is his new project with emcee Boots Riley from the classic hip hop group The Coup.

If you are a fan of Rage Against The Machine, this album is definitely worth listening to. There are some great tracks, but there isn't anything super new going on here...just replace Zack de la Rocha's angst filled politically driven lyrics with Boots' smoother also politically driven rapping style.

Personally I'm not entirely sold, I want Zack back, all the pieces but him seem to be there. I do think the album art above is pretty sweet though.

Make your own judgements, just figured I'd spread the word.

Something Bitchin' This Way Comes

Check out this 1989 album Something Bitchin' This Way Comes by the shortlived group Lock Up.

Lock Up was Tom Morello's ( guitarist of Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Nightwatchman, Street Sweeper Social Club) first signed band. As most of you out there know, Morello is a visionary and a unique guitar virtuoso with a distinct sound comprised of a mastery of effects pedals. No track you ever hear him on utilizes any synthesizers or computerized noises, he manages to do it all using his six string and vast pedal board. It is really quite remarkable, if you are interested I definitely recommend checking out some of his videos on Youtube. I know they blow my mind.

Morello's distinct mastery of soundscapes really came to fruition with the introduction of RATM, with Lock Up we get to see another side of him he rarely boasts anymore--shredding guitar solos. I know that this showcase of traditional technical skill is why I copped this album in the first place, and maybe it is reason enough for some of you out there.

As a whole album, Something Bitchin' This Way Comes is still a pretty interesting album on its own. I gotta say its a pretty cheesy record, but it is definitely a good time. There are some hard hitting arena rock tracks, some with a funky influence, and a few ballads. It actually kind of reminds me of the band King's X for some reason. Plus its fun to see the hints of early Rage coming through Morello.
